Racing
As well as doing
tours, which introduces others to the wonder of a hardworking
husky, Kingmik fields a team of race dogs that spend
some of the winter on the road, testing their metal
against other teams across North America. The race dogs
are the dogs that not only have the most athletic ability,
but the dogs that also exhibit the most “attitude”
. Attitude is everything and we often see dogs go far
just on pure heart and a competitive edge. They know
when they are racing, and while they may just go through
the paces during training, they pour it on at the races.
We
focus on long sprint races and mid distance races. A
long sprint race may be anything from 20 to 40 miles
a day for several days, with a re-start every morning..
At this distance the dogs travel from 15 to 20 mph.
A
mid-distance race can be considered anything from 150
to 400 miles run on a continuous venue. During these
races the dogs and musher camp out and travel on a run/rest
schedule, about equal in duration, but right through
the 24 hour clock. At a race such as this the dogs travel
at about 10 mph. Plenty of time to sing songs and watch
the scenery go by.
Racing
allows us to form an intense bond with our animals,
keep in the thick of things and keep abreast of all
the latest developments in the wonderful world of sleddog
sports.The links below
are for some of the races we have run, or hope to run
in the future.
2006 Racing Season
The Kingmik race team made us proud this year, with consistent top finishes. The stand-out of the team was our main leader Yeti, who was our star boy up front for all 6 races.
He definately is aware of being a super-star now, and is living up to his nick name of "Loud-Mouth Yeti" He developed a fan club, who would follow his progress by snowmobile, stopping to watch him pass. Yeti shared the leading with Jitsu, and her sister Zelda, both tiny little sprites of dogs but fast and consistent and never tired. Rounding out the race team were Pokey, a big piebald boy who is always willing and big hearted; Hiero, Yeti's quiet brother; Minnie, another sister to Jitsu and Zelda and the little firebrand in the family; Asuna, a serious girl who never does wrong in harness; Quennel and Ani, the two powerhouses in the team; Rizla, the 38 pound mother of Jitsu, Minnie and Zelda; Cooter, dad of Jitsu, Minnie and Zelda; Shiloh, tiny but invincible; Purdy, also known as Princess Purdy, and Damsel. Damsel the Precocious. Dogs who completed race training but did not get their time in the spotlight this year were Bilbo, Maynard, Pele, Jazz and Joseph, and Heiro's kids, Tugboat, Kate, and Rip-curl, who have inherited their uncle's mouth.
